Mimar Sinan, famous Muslim of the 16th century

The Ottoman chief architect behind some three hundred buildings, the Selimiye Mosque among them.

The life of Mimar Sinan

Sinan served in the Ottoman army as a military engineer before becoming chief architect to Sultan Süleyman, and then to Selim II and Murad III, for about fifty years.

He and his workshop built more than three hundred major works: mosques, schools, hospitals, bridges and baths. He counted the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, with its great dome, as his masterpiece; the Süleymaniye in Istanbul is another. He died in Istanbul in 1588.
